Freegal is a downloadable music service provided through Forsyth County Public Library, free for all FCPL cardholders.

Freegal offers access to millions of songs. The collection is comprised of music from over 10,000 labels with music that originates in over 60 countries. There is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. Click the banner below to start browsing.


Frequently Asked Questions about Freegal

Q.Is there a limit to how many songs I can download?
A.Yes. There is a set limit of five downloads per week, this is so that all of our customers can have equal access to the songs in the Freegal Music Service. For your convenience a download usage counter is located in the upper right corner of displaying your weekly allotment, there is also a counter in the app. For instance, 1/3 means that you have used one of your three downloads. The download counter resets each week at Monday 12:01 AM (Eastern Time, USA). Top
Q.How do I get my songs?
A.After you find a song you want, click on the "Download Now" link. When given a prompt, select Save and choose where you want to save the song. If you're not presented with a prompt, try right-clicking the link and choosing the option to save the link. By the "Download Now" link, even if you decide to cancel or play it, the download will count towards your weekly allotment. Top
Q.Something happened and my song did not download correctly!
ADon’t worry, under “Recent Downloads” you have the ability to re-download a previously downloaded song up to two more times within 2 weeks from the original download for reinstall purposes. This re-download will not count against your download totals.Top
Q.I logged in to Freegal Music with my library card, accepted the terms and conditions, and then I was taken to the “About Us” page or got a notice that I'm not authorized to view the site.
A.There may be a setting on your computer that is preventing you from logging in. There are a couple things you could try that may enable you to get through. Try clearing your browser history and deleting your browser cookies. How to clear the browser cookies and history varies from browser to browser, but typically, you can do it by opening the browser, and clicking on the Tools menu. From there it might be under a "Delete browsing history" option (if you are using Internet Explorer) or "Clear Recent History" (if you are using Firefox). From there, you should see options specific to browser history and cookies. If you are using Internet Explorer, you may also try putting your security settings back to default. Firewall setting: It's possible there's a conflict with any antivirus or firewall settings you have on your computer. If you are comfortable doing it, please try turning off your antivirus and/or firewall settings and try accessing Freegal Music again (beginning with the Freegal Music login page found here. Top
Q.I have only downloaded two songs, why can’t I download the third one?
A.You might have inadvertently hit the “Download Now” link, or you might have started a download and decided to cancel it. Any time you hit the “Download Now” link that counts against your weekly allotment. Top
Q.I downloaded a song, but I can't find where it is on my computer.
A.If you are using Windows Media Player...
  • Open Windows Media Player
  • Click on the File menu
  • Toward the bottom of the menu, you should see a list of all recently played music
  • Click on the song file you got from Freegal Music, this should cause it to play
  • While in the Now Playing mode (you can click on the "Now Playing" tab to get there), you should see the song listed under Now Playing
  • Right-click on the song title and select Properties from the menu
  • You should now be able to see where the file has been saved to on your computer, listed next to "Location:" in the properties window
  • From the Properties window, you can also select "Open file location" and this will cause a dialog box to open the folder that contains the file. From there you can copy or drag it to your desktop or wherever else you'd like to keep it.
    If you are using iTunes...
  • Open iTunes
  • Locate the song in your music
  • Right-click on the song title
  • Select "Get Info"
  • Select the "Summary" tab (by default it's the tab that's open in the "Get Info" dialog box
  • Toward the bottom of the dialog box, there is a "Where" section which tells you the folder path where the song is located.
